It is either quarried from an open pit quarry or mined from an underground mine. One of the most common dimensional limestones used in the United States for building stone and veneer is Indiana Limestone. This is most commonly quarried from open pits. Here are some pictures of the Indiana Limestone Company's quarry operations: igsdiana.edu/geology/minRes/in... indianalimestonecompany/i... and indianalimestonecompany/i... Other limestone quarries sell their limestone as gravel aggregate and larger sizes of rough stone sometimes called rip rap. Underground limestone mines are less common, as the operations are more expensive than open pit quarries, but they do exist. Here is a description of underground limestone mines in Iowa (they are also found in Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri): igsb.uiowa.edu/browse/undrlime/undrlime.htm Some limestone mines produce chemical lime of very high purity, which is related to the original limestone rock being mined or quarried. An example of a company that produces specialty products from limestone such as calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide (quicklimes) and other is Chemical Lime. This link has a map showing where Chemical Lime has quarries: chemicallime/frames/Frame_ProdPlant/Frame_ProdPlant.htm Quarry operations generally begin by removing any dirt or rock that overlies the limestone. Then drill holes are made and typically blasted with mixtures of fertilizer and diesel fuel, although sometimes dynamite or higher grade explosives are used. The resulting rock is then moved with heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, shovels, and mine haul trucks to crushers which break the rock into smaller and smaller pieces. Different sizes of rock are sorted and sold. In mines that produce dimensional stone the technique is much more sophisticated. Here is a description from Rock Products publication (I quote): "Overburden is first removed with a bulldozer. Arnold's crew then uses a 180-hp Vermeer track trencher with a rock saw attachment to make 3-ft-deep cuts in the stone. Workers then use pneumatic hammers with 111/42-in.-wide masonry bits to drill every foot or so where they want to make a fracture in the rock. Using the centuries old technique of feathering, shims or wedges are driven into these holes to cause the fracture. The bucket blade attached to a skid-steer loader breaks the bottom of the mill block, popping it up at the weak point created by the feathering. Although the blocks can be cut to any width, the average mill block is cut 3 ft wide Yen 7 ft long and weighs 411/42 tons" From:rockproducts/mag/rock_cut_stone_adds/ · 3Limestone Extraction0Limestone is a rock by itself. It it is present on the surface of earth in the form of mountains. Hence there is no question or problem in "extracting" it. Extraction means "to take out something from some other complex entity"; like gold extraction, copper extraction and so on. Limestone mountains or hills are broken down to smaller, suitable-to-carry-away size boulders by drilling into the natural rock, inserting some dynamite into the hole and blasting it to break it. Then it is carried away to the place where it is going to be used. Most of the limestone is used in cement manufacturing. At factories it is further crushed and so on...... Some of it is used in paint industry. About your question, it is not extracted but broken away!2It's normally a quarry material. Most limestone used is massive bedded and is excavated by drilling holes for explosives to break up the limestone into manageable sized boulders, which are then worked into various sizes appropriate for the end use in mind.1To extract limestone, limestone quarry equipment is necessary. Mineral ore and stone quarrying equipment is widely used in quarrying plant. A quarrying processing plant normally begins with crushing plant, and then is grinding plant which is make quarrying material with further use. For quarrying mineral ore and stone, we need ore & stone crushing equipment and ore & stone grinding equipment. What types of crushing equipment do we need?
